Proposals.GNB – NSW Geographical Names Board
The Geographical Names Board is a statutory authority of the Department of Customer Service New South Wales, and the official body for naming and recording details of places and geographical names in New South Wales, Australia.
Experience Digital was engaged by the NSW Government to design and build a web-based business application that replaced two ageing systems with a platform that would streamline the way the NSW Government and all stakeholders (the public, developers, local government, emergency services) work together to name roads and places across the State. A vital task was the migration of the existing spatial data from a legacy IBM Informix database to a modernised PostgreSQL and JSON data architecture.
The new platform designed and built by Experience Digital has resulted in a range of benefits including real-time proposal status updates, self-serve user management, email notifications of road name proposal progress, automated pre-evaluation of place and road name proposals, automated road name eligibility check, road name pre-approval for developers and councils, and the spatially-enabled road name search. With the utilisation of AWS services, the technology stack for the platform sits on a modern serverless cloud architecture with open application and database technology, making the solution readily scalable and extensible, with a lower total life cost.
Experience Digital delivered this significant project as part of the NSW Government’s spatial data initiatives program that is central to the State’s ongoing digital transformation.
